Vacuuming removes loose dirt, but over time carpets and upholstery hold on to soil, oils and odours deep in the fibres, especially in hallways, on stairs and in front of sofas. Professional carpet cleaning uses equipment designed to lift that ingrained dirt and rinse it away.

Most domestic carpet cleaning uses hot water extraction (often called steam cleaning), while low-moisture methods are common in offices and for carpets that need to dry quickly. A good carpet cleaner will identify the fibre, test any stains and recommend the right method rather than using the same approach on everything.

How professional carpet cleaning works

With hot water extraction, a cleaning solution is sprayed into the carpet and extracted along with loosened dirt by a powerful vacuum. Portable machines are carried into the home; truck-mounted systems stay in a van outside and need parking close by. Carpets are usually left damp and need some hours to dry.

Low-moisture or 'dry' methods use a small amount of solution with a pad or compound and dry much faster, which suits busy offices and some delicate fibres. Wool, silk and some natural fibres need particular care, so it's worth telling the cleaner what your carpet is made of if you know.

Sofa, upholstery and mattress cleaning

Upholstery cleaners check the fabric and its care code before choosing a method, as some fabrics can shrink, mark or change colour with too much moisture. Many carpet cleaners also clean sofas, armchairs, dining chairs and mattresses; some specialise in upholstery only.

Mattress cleaning usually combines thorough vacuuming with surface cleaning and, where suitable, stain treatment. It won't make an old mattress new, but it can freshen it and deal with surface marks. See our upholstery cleaning guide for more.

What to expect from stain removal

Many everyday marks lift well with professional treatment, but results depend on what caused the stain, how long it has been there, the fibre and anything already used on it. Bleach spots, burns and dye changes are damage rather than dirt and generally can't be cleaned out.

A reputable cleaner will test and explain what's realistic rather than promising that every mark will disappear. If a stain is new, blot it with clean water and a white cloth rather than rubbing, and avoid strong household products that may set it or damage the fibre.

When to book carpet cleaning

Carpet cleaning can be booked at any time of year, but carpets dry faster when the home can be well ventilated. Many people book before moving out of a rented home, before or after a family event, or once a year as part of a spring clean.

If you're having a deep clean or end of tenancy clean, ask for carpets to be added to the same booking and done last, so that clean carpets aren't walked over by other cleaners.

Good to know

  • Check the care label or manufacturer's guidance for sofas and rugs; some fabrics should only be cleaned by specialists.
  • Ask how long carpets will take to dry and keep children and pets off them until they are.
  • Some carpet warranties specify cleaning methods – check before booking if your carpet is new.
  • Ask whether the cleaner moves furniture and how they protect it while carpets dry.

Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning: frequently asked questions

How much does carpet cleaning cost?

Published UK guides put an average room at roughly £25–£75, with minimum charges commonly around £50–£100 per visit. See our carpet cleaning cost guide for details.

How long does it take carpets to dry?

After hot water extraction, carpets often take several hours to dry, depending on ventilation, the fibre and the weather. Low-moisture methods are faster.

Can all stains be removed?

No. Many common stains respond well, but results depend on the cause, age and fibre, and some marks are permanent damage. A good cleaner will be honest about what's realistic.

Do carpet cleaners also clean sofas?

Many do, and some specialise in upholstery. They should check the fabric before choosing a method.

Is carpet cleaning needed at the end of a tenancy?

Only if your agreement requires it or the carpets are dirtier than at check-in, allowing for fair wear and tear.
