Office cleaning keeps shared spaces – kitchens, washrooms, meeting rooms and desks – clean and pleasant for staff and visitors. In most offices it is done on a regular schedule, before or after working hours, by a contracted cleaning company.

The right schedule depends on how many people use the office and how. A small office used a few days a week may need two or three visits; a busy open-plan office often needs daily cleaning of kitchens and washrooms, with desks and floors on a set rotation.

Tell us the size of your office, how many people use it and when you'd like cleaning done, and local office cleaners can send quotes.

What office cleaners are commonly asked to do

Desks and workstations

Dusting and wiping clear desks, screens' surrounds and phones, following any clear-desk policy.

Kitchens and break areas

Worktops, sinks, the outsides of appliances, tables and floors; some include dishwashers.

Washrooms

Toilets, basins, mirrors and floors cleaned, and consumables restocked.

Floors

Vacuuming carpets and mopping hard floors, with periodic deeper cleaning.

Bins and recycling

Emptying bins and taking waste and recycling to the right collection points.

Periodic deep cleans

High-level dusting, carpet cleaning, internal glass and kitchen deep cleans.

What's usually included in office cleaning

Office cleaning works best with a written specification: a list of tasks by area, split into daily, weekly and periodic jobs. It makes quotes comparable and gives both sides a clear standard. Our guide to what's included in office cleaning has an example.

  • Daily: bins, kitchens, washrooms, touch points
  • Daily or several times a week: desks and floors
  • Weekly: meeting rooms, glass partitions, skirting
  • Periodic: carpets, high-level dusting, deep cleans

Out-of-hours and daytime cleaning

Most office cleaning is done early in the morning or in the evening so that cleaners can work without disturbing staff. Some offices also have a daytime cleaner or porter who keeps kitchens and washrooms in order during the day.

Out-of-hours cleaning usually involves key holding or access codes, so agree security procedures and lone-working arrangements with the cleaning company.

Getting the schedule right

Start by thinking about how the office is used: headcount, hybrid working patterns, kitchen use and visitor numbers. A cleaning company can then suggest a schedule, and you can adjust it as you see results.

Review the specification after a few months. It's common to increase washroom visits and reduce desk cleaning in hybrid offices, for example.

Good to know

  • Ask for evidence of insurance and how cleaners are vetted for key holding.
  • Agree who supplies consumables and how stock levels are monitored.
  • Make sure cleaners won't move papers or equipment on desks unless agreed.
  • Agree a contact and a simple way to report issues.
