Oven cleaning is one of the most unpleasant jobs in the home, and one of the most popular to hand over. Over months of cooking, grease and food residue bake onto the oven interior, door glass, racks and trays, and can start to smoke and smell when the oven heats up.
Specialist oven cleaners typically remove the racks, trays and other removable parts and clean them separately – many use a heated dip tank in their van – while the interior, door and glass are cleaned by hand. General cleaning companies also offer oven cleaning, often as an add-on to a deep or end of tenancy clean.
Tell us what type of oven you have and whether the hob or extractor need doing too, and local oven cleaners can send quotes.

How a professional oven clean works
A typical oven clean starts with protecting the floor and worktops, then removing racks, trays, shelf supports and – where the design allows – the door glass and fan cover. Removable parts are cleaned separately while the interior is degreased and cleaned by hand.
Professional oven cleaners use products designed for the job and should follow manufacturers' guidance, especially on self-cleaning (pyrolytic or catalytic) ovens, where some products and abrasive pads can damage the liners. Tell the cleaner the make and model if you know it.
Different ovens, different jobs
Single built-in or freestanding ovens are the quickest. Double ovens and range cookers have more compartments and glass, and some range cookers and heat-storage cookers need specialist knowledge. Catalytic liners should not be scrubbed with abrasive products, and pyrolytic ovens have their own self-cleaning cycle that a cleaner may advise on.
If your oven is old or has damaged seals, enamel or glass, a cleaner will usually point it out before starting rather than make it worse.
When to book oven cleaning
Many households book an oven clean once or twice a year, often before Christmas, which is a busy time for oven cleaners. If the oven smokes or smells when it warms up, it's probably due.
If you're moving out of a rented property, oven cleaning is commonly included in an end of tenancy clean – check the checklist before booking separately.

Safety and good practice
- Never mix oven cleaning products with other chemicals, and keep children and pets away while products are in use.
- Allow the oven to cool fully before cleaning; cleaners will usually ask for it not to be used for a few hours beforehand.
- Ask whether the products used are suitable for your oven type and liners.
- Faulty doors, seals or electrics should be checked by a qualified appliance engineer rather than a cleaner.
