Window cleaning is one of the few household jobs most people are happy to hand over: upstairs windows are awkward and unsafe to reach without the right equipment, and the British weather leaves glass streaked and dull within weeks.

Many window cleaners now use water-fed pole systems, which deliver purified water through a brush on a long pole so that upstairs windows can be cleaned from the ground. Others use traditional methods with a squeegee, and some offer both. Services such as frames, sills, conservatory roofs and gutters vary from one window cleaner to the next.

Window cleaning jobs local cleaners quote for

Regular exterior window cleaning

A round every four to eight weeks, often with payment per visit.

One-off window cleans

Before selling, after building work or when windows haven't been cleaned for a while.

Frames, sills and doors

Cleaning uPVC or timber frames and sills along with the glass, often on a first clean or periodically.

Internal window cleaning

Inside glass and frames, usually by arrangement and priced separately.

Conservatories

Glass and, where the window cleaner offers it, conservatory roofs.

Commercial window cleaning

Shopfronts, offices and communal areas, often on a regular schedule.

Water-fed poles and traditional window cleaning

Water-fed pole systems use purified water that dries without leaving mineral spots. The window cleaner scrubs the glass and frames with a brush on an extending pole and rinses them, working from the ground. It avoids ladders for most two-storey homes and lets frames be cleaned at the same time.

Traditional cleaning uses a cleaning solution, applicator and squeegee, usually from ladders for upstairs windows. It can give a very sharp finish on glass. The right method depends on the property, access and the window cleaner's equipment.

How often should windows be cleaned?

Many households have exterior windows cleaned every four to eight weeks. Homes near busy roads, the coast or building sites may need more frequent visits; sheltered homes may be fine with less.

Regular rounds are usually cheaper per visit than one-off cleans, because the windows don't build up as much dirt and the window cleaner can plan routes around nearby customers.

Planning window cleaning

Window cleaners work year round, though very cold, icy or stormy weather can delay rounds. Rain doesn't always mean a wasted clean when purified water is used, but ask how your window cleaner handles bad weather.

If building work, roofing or rendering is planned, book a one-off clean once it's finished rather than before.

Safety and good practice

  • Work at height carries risks. Ask how upstairs windows will be reached and what safety measures are used.
  • Check that the window cleaner has public liability insurance.
  • Tell the window cleaner about locked gates, rear access and any fragile glass or roofs.
  • Agree how and when payment is made for regular rounds.
