Cleaning Services: Find Local Cleaners and Compare Quotes

Regular house cleaning, deep cleans, end of tenancy, carpets, ovens, windows, offices and more. See what each type of clean involves and what affects the price, then request quotes from cleaners who cover your postcode.

"Cleaning services" covers a lot of different work. A domestic cleaner who comes for three hours every Thursday, a team of four doing an end of tenancy clean in a single afternoon and a carpet cleaner with a van-mounted extraction machine are all professional cleaners – but they price, plan and carry out their work very differently.

This page sets out the main types of professional cleaning in the UK, what each one usually includes and when it makes sense to book it. Services and task lists vary from one cleaner or company to the next, so treat these as typical descriptions and check exactly what's covered in each quote.

Cleaning for homes

Most people looking for a cleaner want one of three things: someone to keep the house under control every week or two, a one-off top-to-bottom clean, or a thorough clean when a tenancy ends.

Specialist cleaning

Some jobs need dedicated equipment or experience – hot water extraction machines for carpets, dip tanks for oven racks, water-fed poles for upstairs windows, fine-filter vacuums for builders' dust.

Cleaning for businesses

Commercial cleaning is usually contracted to a written specification, with daily, weekly and periodic tasks and work scheduled around opening hours.

Regular cleaning, one-off cleans and deep cleans

Regular cleaning – weekly or fortnightly – is maintenance. The cleaner works through the same rooms each visit, keeping kitchens, bathrooms and floors in order. It's usually charged by the hour.

A one-off clean is a single standard visit: before guests arrive, after a busy few weeks or ahead of a viewing. Many cleaners set a minimum number of hours and may charge a little more per hour than for a regular slot.

A deep clean goes further: descaling, degreasing, skirting boards, door frames and behind and under furniture. It's usually quoted as a fixed price for the property and often needs a team. Our guide to deep cleaning vs regular cleaning explains which you're likely to need.

When it makes sense to hire a professional

Plenty of households never use a cleaner, and that's fine. Whether professional cleaning is worth it depends on your time, budget, the size of the property and the job in hand. These are the situations where people most often decide to hand it over:

More on this in our guide to the benefits of professional cleaning.

  • You're short of time and cleaning is eating into evenings or weekends.
  • A tenancy is ending and the property has to match the check-in inventory.
  • You've moved into a home that wasn't left as clean as you'd like.
  • Building or renovation work has left fine dust through the house.
  • Carpets, upholstery or the oven need equipment you don't have.
  • Your office, shop or communal areas need cleaning on a set schedule.

What affects a cleaning quote

Cleaners price in different units – per hour, per property, per room or per item – so it's worth knowing which one a quote uses. Whatever the unit, these are the things that move the price:

Type of clean
A regular maintenance clean, a deep clean and an end of tenancy clean of the same home take very different amounts of time.
Size of the property
Bedrooms, bathrooms, reception rooms and overall floor area set the baseline for hours or a fixed price.
Condition
Heavy grease, limescale, mould, pet hair or a home that hasn't been cleaned for a while all add time.
Frequency
Regular weekly or fortnightly slots are usually priced by the hour; one-off cleans often cost more per hour or are quoted as a fixed fee.
What's included
Ovens, inside cupboards and appliances, interior windows, carpets and ironing may be included or extra.
Location and access
London and the South East tend to cost more; parking, stairs without a lift and congestion charges can affect equipment-heavy jobs.

Choosing a cleaner or cleaning company

  • Ask for a written task list so you know what each visit or job includes.
  • Check public liability insurance, and how breakages or damage are handled.
  • Ask who supplies products and equipment, and whether they suit your surfaces.
  • For regular cleaning, agree cover for holidays and sickness, and notice periods.
  • For end of tenancy cleans, ask about any re-clean policy and keep the invoice.
  • Agree how keys, alarm codes and access will be managed.

Cleaning services: frequently asked questions

What do professional cleaners do?

It depends on the service. Domestic cleaners keep kitchens, bathrooms, floors and living areas clean on a regular schedule; deep and end of tenancy cleaners do intensive one-off cleans; specialists handle carpets, upholstery, ovens and windows; and commercial cleaners look after offices, shops and shared buildings. What's included varies between providers, so always check the task list in a quote.

Should I hire an independent cleaner or a cleaning company?

Both can work well. Independent cleaners often charge less per hour and you may build a good relationship with one person. Companies usually charge more but may handle vetting, insurance, replacement cover and larger teams for one-off jobs. Ask any provider about insurance, references and what happens if a visit is missed.

How much do cleaners charge?

Regular domestic cleaning is usually charged by the hour, with published UK guides commonly showing around £15–£25 per hour. Deep cleans, end of tenancy cleans and specialist services are usually quoted per property, per room or per item. See our cleaning prices guide for indicative ranges with their units.

Is it free to request cleaning quotes?

Yes. Requesting quotes through Cleaning Prices costs nothing and you are under no obligation to accept any quote you receive.

Do I need to be at home while the cleaner works?

Not necessarily. Many people are present for the first visit to explain priorities and then provide a key. For end of tenancy and after builders cleans, the property is often empty anyway. Agree access arrangements in writing.

Which cleaning service do I need?

If you want ongoing help, ask for regular domestic cleaning. If the home needs a thorough reset, ask for a deep clean. If you're leaving a rental, ask for an end of tenancy clean. Our guide to types of cleaning services explains the differences.
