Quotes and hiring a cleaner

What Should a Cleaning Quote Include?

A clear written quote protects both you and the cleaner. Here's what a good cleaning quote should set out, and what to ask for if it's missing.

The essentials

At a minimum, a cleaning quote should state:

  • The type of clean (regular, one-off, deep, end of tenancy, etc.)
  • The property address or postcode, and its size
  • The price and the unit (per hour, per visit, fixed price)
  • The number of hours or cleaners allowed, where relevant
  • The date, or the frequency and day for regular cleaning
  • Whether VAT is included

A task list

The most useful part of a quote is a room-by-room list of what's included. For regular cleaning it might be a standard checklist; for deep and end of tenancy cleans it should be detailed. It means you can check the work against something specific.

What's not included

Good quotes also say what's excluded or extra: ovens, inside appliances, carpets, interior windows, walls, balconies, waste removal. This avoids surprises on the day.

Practical details

Look for, or ask about:

  • Who supplies products and equipment
  • Access arrangements and key holding
  • Parking or travel charges
  • What happens if the job takes longer than expected
  • Payment terms and when payment is due
  • Cancellation and notice periods

Insurance and guarantees

A quote from a company should mention, or the company should be able to confirm, public liability insurance. For end of tenancy cleans, ask whether there's a re-clean policy and how long it lasts. Be wary of any company that promises your deposit back – no cleaner can guarantee that.

Common questions

Should a cleaning quote be in writing?

Ideally, yes. Even an email setting out the price and tasks is better than a verbal agreement.

Is a quote the same as an estimate?

Not always. A fixed quote should be the price you pay for the agreed scope; an estimate may change. Ask which it is.

Can a cleaner charge more on the day?

Only if the agreement allows for it, for example if the property is in worse condition than described. Ask how this is handled before booking.
