What vacuuming can't do
Regular vacuuming removes loose dust and grit, but over time carpets hold on to oils, soil and odours deep in the pile – especially in hallways, on stairs and in front of sofas, where they look flattened and grey. Professional cleaning uses equipment designed to loosen and extract that ingrained dirt.
The benefits
Professional carpet cleaning can:
- Lift ingrained soil from high-traffic areas
- Freshen carpets and reduce everyday odours
- Treat many common spills and marks
- Help carpets look better before a sale, a let or an event
- Form part of regular carpet maintenance alongside vacuuming
- Meet a tenancy requirement for professional cleaning, where your agreement has one
Cleaning methods
Hot water extraction – often called steam cleaning – is the most common method for domestic carpets. A cleaning solution is sprayed into the pile and extracted along with loosened dirt. Carpets are left damp and need some hours to dry.
Low-moisture methods use a small amount of solution with a pad or compound and dry faster, which suits offices and some delicate fibres. Wool, silk and natural-fibre carpets may need specialist methods; tell the cleaner the fibre if you know it.

What to expect from stain removal
Many everyday stains respond well to professional treatment, but not all. Results depend on what caused the stain, how long it's been there, the fibre and anything previously used on it. Bleach spots, burns and dye changes are damage rather than dirt and generally can't be cleaned out.
A reputable cleaner will test, explain what's realistic and avoid promising that every mark will disappear.
How often to book
There's no fixed rule. Many households have carpets cleaned roughly once a year, and more often with children, pets or heavy use. Regular vacuuming between cleans makes the biggest difference to how long carpets look good.
