How to Clean Your House Fast

Guests in an hour? Landlord visit tomorrow? A speed clean isn't about doing everything – it's about doing the things people notice, in the right order.

The principle: what people notice

Visitors notice clutter, smells, the bathroom and the kitchen. They rarely notice skirting boards or inside cupboards. A fast clean focuses on clearing surfaces, freshening the air, and making the rooms guests will use look and smell clean.

Work top to bottom and left to right in each room so you don't redo areas, and carry everything you need in a caddy or bucket so you're not walking back and forth.

The 30-minute plan

If you only have half an hour, do this, in this order:

A 30-minute speed clean for a typical home. Adjust times to suit.
TimeTask
0–2 minOpen windows, put the dishwasher or washing-up on, start a bag for rubbish
2–10 minClutter sweep: carry a basket through the main rooms, gather everything that doesn't belong
10–17 minBathroom: toilet seat and rim, basin and taps, mirror, fresh hand towel, empty bin
17–24 minKitchen: clear and wipe worktops and hob, clean the sink, take out the bin
24–28 minVacuum the entrance, hallway and main living area
28–30 minPlump cushions, fold throws, dim harsh lights or open curtains

The 60-minute plan

With an hour, do everything in the 30-minute plan, then add: dust the main surfaces in the living room with a microfibre cloth, wipe the front of the fridge, oven and microwave, mop the kitchen and bathroom floors, wipe light switches and door handles, and clean the inside of the front door glass if it has any. Make the beds, even if no one will see them – it makes the whole house feel tidier.

Shortcuts that work

A few tricks make a speed clean much more effective:

  • Use a laundry basket for a clutter sweep, then deal with it later
  • Spray the toilet and basin first, then do something else while the product works
  • Close doors to rooms guests won't use
  • Use one multi-surface spray and a stack of microfibre cloths for speed
  • Vacuum only the visible floor in main rooms; the edges can wait
  • Empty every bin – it removes the most common source of smells
  • Put fresh towels in the bathroom; it makes it look cleaner instantly

Before an inspection

For a landlord or letting agent visit, the focus shifts slightly: they're looking at condition, damp, mould and hygiene rather than how cosy it looks. Add a quick wipe of any surface mould on window seals and bathroom sealant, make sure access to radiators and utility cupboards is clear, and note any repairs to mention. See preparing for a mid-tenancy inspection.

Making speed cleans less necessary

A 10-minute daily reset – dishes done, surfaces cleared, a quick bathroom wipe – means a speed clean is rarely needed. A regular cleaner every week or fortnight keeps the deeper tasks under control. Our guides to how often you should clean your house and keeping a house clean with kids have routines that work for busy households.

A speed-cleaning kit

Speed cleaning works best when everything is in one place. Keep a caddy with a multi-surface spray, a bathroom spray, a stack of microfibre cloths, a toilet brush and cleaner, a small brush and dustpan and a roll of bin bags. Store it where you can grab it in seconds, ideally upstairs if your bathroom is there.

A cordless vacuum and a flat spray mop also save time compared with getting out a corded vacuum and a bucket. Our cleaning supplies list covers what's worth buying, and how often to clean your house suggests routines that keep things under control.

Common questions

How can I clean my house in 30 minutes?

Open windows, do a clutter sweep, clean the bathroom surfaces and toilet, wipe the kitchen worktops and sink, empty bins, vacuum the main floors and tidy cushions.

What should I clean first when guests are coming?

Clutter in the main rooms, then the bathroom and kitchen, then floors. These are what visitors notice most.

How do I make my house smell clean quickly?

Open windows, empty all bins, clean the toilet, run the extractor fan and put fresh towels out. Avoid masking smells with strong air freshener.

What is a speed clean?

A fast, focused clean of the areas that matter most, done in a set order with a time limit, rather than a thorough top-to-bottom clean.

Can a cleaner come at short notice?

Some can, especially for one-off cleans, but availability is limited. Regular cleaning makes last-minute cleans less necessary.
