The general rule
Many carpet manufacturers and cleaning industry bodies recommend professional cleaning every 12–18 months for a typical home. Some carpet warranties require periodic professional cleaning to stay valid – check your paperwork if you've recently bought new carpet.
That's only a starting point. A household with two dogs and three children needs cleaning more often than a retired couple in a flat. The best interval for you depends on who lives in the home and how it's used.
Suggested intervals
Use this as a guide and adjust for how your carpets actually look and smell:
| Household or setting | Suggested interval |
|---|---|
| One or two adults, no pets | Every 18–24 months |
| Family with young children | Every 6–12 months |
| Homes with pets | Every 6–12 months |
| Allergy or asthma sufferers | Every 6 months, with frequent HEPA vacuuming |
| Smokers in the home | Every 6–12 months |
| Rented property between tenancies | At each change of tenant if needed |
| Busy offices and reception areas | Every 3–12 months, with interim spot cleaning |
Suggested professional carpet cleaning intervals. Busy areas such as hallways and stairs may need cleaning more often than bedrooms.
Signs your carpets need cleaning
Don't wait for the calendar if you notice any of these:
- Grey or darker traffic lanes in hallways, doorways and in front of sofas
- Flattened, matted pile that doesn't lift with vacuuming
- Lingering smells, especially on damp days
- Spots and spills that have spread or reappeared
- Allergy symptoms that are worse at home
- Visible dirt at the edges of rooms along the skirting board (filtration soiling)
Why cleaning helps carpets last
Carpet fibres are worn down by grit acting like sandpaper as people walk on it. Vacuuming removes most loose grit, but sticky residues – skin oils, cooking fat drawn in on shoes, drink spills – hold dirt in the pile. Over time the fibres become abraded, and the carpet looks worn even after cleaning.
Professional hot water extraction rinses out those residues and the grit trapped with them, which slows wear and restores some of the pile's appearance. That's why regular professional cleaning is cheaper than replacing carpets early. For more on the benefits, see our carpet cleaning guide.

In between professional cleans
Vacuum at least weekly, and more often in busy areas and homes with pets. Use doormats at every entrance and a no-shoes policy indoors if it suits your household. Deal with spills immediately – see our carpet stain removal guide. Rotate rugs and move furniture slightly from time to time to spread wear. Our guide to cleaning carpets at home covers DIY methods.
Rented homes and businesses
Landlords often schedule carpet cleaning between tenancies, and tenants commonly book it before moving out – see whether tenants have to clean carpets. In offices, shops and hotels, carpets usually need a programme of regular interim cleaning plus periodic deep extraction; see commercial carpet cleaning.
Professional carpet cleaning is usually priced per room or by area. See carpet cleaning prices and our carpet cleaning service page.
Making the most of each professional clean
Professional cleaning goes further when the carpet is prepared. Vacuum thoroughly the day before, move small items and breakables, and tell the cleaner about stains, their cause and anything you've already tried. Ask for traffic lanes and stain areas to be pre-treated, and ask about drying time so you can plan around it.
After cleaning, keep foot traffic light until the carpet is dry, use doormats and consider a stain protector in busy areas. A good routine of weekly vacuuming and quick spot cleaning means the next professional clean has less to deal with – and the carpet stays looking good for longer.
