Why deep cleans take so long
A regular clean maintains a home that's already clean. A deep clean resets one that isn't: limescale on taps and screens, grease on cupboards, dust on skirting boards and high shelves, grime in grout, inside appliances and behind furniture. Many of these tasks need products to dwell, or careful detail work, and that takes time.
Cleaning companies usually quote a deep clean in cleaner-hours and send a team, so the elapsed time on the day is shorter than the total hours of work.
Typical times by home size
These are rough guides for a lived-in home in average condition. Your quote may differ.
| Property | Total cleaner-hours | Typical on-the-day time |
|---|---|---|
| Studio or 1 bedroom flat | Around 4–8 hours | Half a day with one or two cleaners |
| 2 bedroom flat or house | Around 7–12 hours | Most of a day with two cleaners |
| 3 bedroom house | Around 10–16 hours | A full day with two or three cleaners |
| 4–5 bedroom house | Around 16–25+ hours | A full day with a larger team, or two days |
Indicative deep clean durations. Actual time depends on condition, extras and team size.
What makes a deep clean take longer
The size of the home is only one factor. These have a big effect on time:
- Condition: years of build-up takes much longer than a home cleaned regularly
- Clutter: cleaners need clear surfaces and floors to work efficiently
- Hard water: heavy limescale on taps, screens and tiles is slow to remove
- Number of bathrooms: each bathroom adds significant time
- Kitchen size and grease, especially inside cupboards and the extractor
- Extras such as oven cleaning, inside the fridge, windows and carpet cleaning
- Access: stairs without a lift, parking and high ceilings

How to speed it up
The single most effective thing you can do is declutter beforehand – clear worktops, bathroom surfaces, floors and the inside of any cupboards you want cleaned. Our guide on decluttering before a deep clean explains how. Make sure the cleaners have parking, access, hot water and power.
Be clear in advance about priorities. If the kitchen and bathrooms matter most, say so; the team can plan their time around them. Photos of the problem areas help the company send the right number of cleaners.
Deep clean vs end of tenancy clean
End of tenancy cleans are usually quicker than deep cleans of the same home, because the property is empty and there's no clutter – but they include more detail inside cupboards and appliances. See how long end of tenancy cleaning takes for typical times, and our comparison of deep cleaning and regular cleaning for how they differ.
Hourly or fixed price?
Some companies quote deep cleans by the hour, others as a fixed price. With hourly quotes, ask how many hours they estimate and what happens if it runs over. With fixed prices, ask what's included and whether there's a re-clean guarantee. Our guide to hourly vs fixed price cleaning compares the two. For indicative costs, see deep cleaning prices.
